A Visit to Coventry. The New Cathedral, The Herbert Gallery and The Guildhall
Thursday 11 October 2018

A Visit to Coventry.

Following the successful visit to Tate Liverpool last year to see the works of John Piper, a visit to Coventry has been arranged so we can also see Piper’s work in the baptistry window in the New Cathedral. There will be tea and coffee on arrival and then we will have a guided tour of the cathedral. Designed by architect Sir Basil Spence and consecrated in 1962, the cathedral is particularly noted for it’s modernist design. It stands alongside the ruins of the C14 Gothic cathedral which was severely bombed in 1940. Along with the window by Piper, the interior has the huge tapestry ‘Christ in Glory” by Graham Sutherland and the sculpture ‘Mater Dolorosa' by John Bridgeman. The sculpture of St Michael on the exterior is by Jacob Epstein.

We will have time to visit the nearby Herbert Gallery and have lunch (not provided)  after which we will have a talk and a tour of the incredibly well preserved Mediaeval Guildhall.
